Forces pension information

Dear All

Many of you will be aware that the Legion is supporting the Force Pensions Society’s ‘Justice for Widows’ campaign. On 10 March, Katy Clark MP tabled a supportive Early Day Motion (EDM 1157), which calls on the Government to amend the 1975 Armed Forces Pension Scheme so that widows and widowers no longer have to sacrifice their pension entitlement if they choose to cohabit with a new partner or remarry later in life.  I am pleased to say that the EDM currently enjoys cross-party and growing support.  The FPS and Legion obviously welcome this motion, and we have each issued statements to this effect.  You can read the Legion’s full statement on our website: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/news-events/news/campaigning/the-legion-welcomes-new-motion-on-justice-for-widows-campaign.

There have been a number of enquiries this morning about whether members should write to their MP and ask them to sign EDM 1157.  The Legion is not proactively asking members to write to their MP, but should anyone wish to, I would be grateful if you could please bring to their attention our guidance notes, which suggest some helpful lines to take.  You can find our guidance notes via the following link: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/media/3880217/JusticeforWidowsGuidance.pdf.

Given the complexity of Armed Forces pension scheme arrangements, and the FPS’s clear expertise in this area, please be aware that our colleagues in the FPS will be leading on this campaign. The Legion will be playing a largely supportive role, providing an authoritative view on how this issue relates to the Armed Forces Covenant.

I hope that this update proves helpful. Should you need any further information at all, please do just let me know.

Best wishes,

 Laura Pett
